Merindades Route

A merindad was a territory placed under the authority and administration of a nobleman, the Merino, who, appointed by the king, held all kinds of powers and responsibilities.
The Merindades shape the greenest and most northern-spirited area of the province of Burgos.
  • Hotel Abadía - Ruta las Merindades

The route that starts from the Merindad de Valdivielso proposes an approximate itinerary of about 60 kilometers, passing through small villages with beautiful natural landscapes and important artistic heritage. Valdenoceda, at the foot of the La Mazorra pass; continuing through Quintana de Valdivielso, very close to El Almiñé with its remarkable Romanesque church of San Nicolás. A small marked track leads us to the doors of the Romanesque church of San Pedro de Tejada, one of the most outstanding examples of Burgos Romanesque architecture.

The route ends in Frías, whose castle perched on a rocky outcrop makes this village a unique landmark in Las Merindades. The curious hanging houses and, above all, the medieval bridge represent other singular highlights of one of the most beautiful towns in the northern part of the province.

The uniqueness of this region is defined by its mountainous and rugged character and its high scenic value, characteristic of an environment rich in rivers, valleys, gorges, and waterfalls. The northern area of Las Merindades lies near the Cantabrian Mountain Range and the Orduña Mountains, bordering Cantabria and Biscay. The density of settlements, the interesting artistic heritage, and the richness of its ecosystems require careful and in-depth attention.

To the south of Las Merindades, structured by the winding course of the River Ebro, the area treasures numerous natural corners of great landscape beauty that offer visitors unique spots such as the Hocinos and Purón gorges, the Pisas Waterfall, and the Valdebezana Valley. In the surroundings, it is possible to visit important monuments such as the Presillas hermitage and the Romanesque church of San Pedro de Tejada. You can also visit one of the most picturesque towns in Europe: Frías.
