Covarrubias, located by the Arlanza River on its fertile riverside, rocked by the slow flow of the water, beneath the tower of Doña Urraca and before the sober and elegant façade of the Collegiate Church. The urban area, with remains of the old wall, is one of the finest examples of traditional architecture in Spain.
Among its heritage, the 15th-century Collegiate Church of San Cosme and San Damián stands out. The museum inside the collegiate church preserves very interesting pieces, including the 16th-century triptych of the Adoration of the Magi.
Other points of interest include the 15th-century Church of Santo Tomás, the 10th-century Tower of Fernán González, the 16th-century Arch of the Adelantamiento of Castile, the stone cross and the jurisdictional pillory. The entire town is an open-air museum of traditional architecture. Santo Domingo de Silos is today a village, but once it was only the monastery. But… what a monastery!
The Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos contains one of the greatest treasures of Romanesque art in the world: its monastic cloister. The lower level, dating from the late 11th and early 12th centuries, features capitals with eastern and Hispano-Caliphate motifs of great beauty and artistic perfection, set upon double columns. In the corners, eight magnificent reliefs depict scenes from the life of Christ. The museum contains noteworthy pieces of goldsmithing, and the old pharmacy is also worth a visit. Every day, liturgical services are sung in Gregorian chant. It is an ideal place to rest and stay in a modern and welcoming establishment, the Hotel Santo Domingo de Silos.
