The route follows the path taken by Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, “El Cid”, during his exile from Castile, based on the account told in the epic poem Cantar de Mio Cid. History and legend intertwine along a physical journey that begins in Vivar del Cid and crosses eight provinces before reaching Valencia. The main provincial landmarks of the route are Vivar, Burgos, the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña, Covarrubias, Santo Domingo de Silos, and Clunia. A consortium promoted by the provincial councils is responsible for enhancing and promoting the tourism resources generated by this initiative.
