Ribera Route

This 90-kilometre itinerary is a journey through history, art, culture, and fine dining. The Ribera del Duero is, in many cases, synonymous with excellent wine, although it is much more than that.

Aranda de Duero holds an interesting heritage, the result of a rich and complex historical past. Following the N-122 we reach La Vid, home to the monumental 12th-century Monastery of Santa María. Our next destination is Peñaranda de Duero, a village perfect for walking and full of unique corners. Along the CL-111 we arrive in Coruña del Conde. Birthplace of aviation pioneer Diego Marín, it is worth visiting its Romanesque hermitage of Santo Cristo and its castle. The route continues through Peñalba de Castro, where the majestic ruins of the Roman city of Clunia stand; the theatre, forum, and baths still reflect its former grandeur. In Caleruega, birthplace of Saint Dominic of Guzmán.

A few kilometres away, near the baths of Valdearados, lies the Roman villa of Santa Cruz, home to a mosaic dedicated to Bacchus. The itinerary ends in Gumiel de Izán, a village surrounded by vineyards, where the medieval past can be seen in its noble houses and the arches of its former city walls.

The River Duero crosses the southernmost tip of the province of Burgos. Along its course, giving name and character to the region, it has shaped a land of strong identity: the Ribera del Duero. After intense Romanisation, the region became a natural frontier between Christians and Muslims. All this rich past—later revitalised by the rise of viticulture in the 18th century—has left behind a varied and abundant artistic and monumental legacy.

As the capital of the region, the town possesses many reasons to be considered one of the icons of the province. A history linked to royalty, extensive vineyards that have made the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin one of the most prestigious and respected wine regions, an outstanding monumental heritage, gastronomy centred on roast suckling lamb that has crossed borders, excellent connections, landscapes... in short, a unique opportunity to enjoy with all five senses.
